“The ramblings and grumblings of author Ad Hudler”

A helpful housekeeping hint that saves money and time
Friday, May 8, 2009

The stay-at-home-dad character in my newest novel, Man of the House, gives "Handy Hints for Caregiver Sanity" throughout the book. Here's one he should have included:

I've heard way too many moms complain about the loads of dirty towels they have to launder every week. Well, this isn't true in my house, and here's why: Towels mildew and get smelly when they're left on the floor. We all hang our damp towels, open and unfolded, on racks in the bathroom, and they dry out in no time with no mildewy smell. My wife, daughter and I use the same towels for a week to 10 days.

No, it's not gross. Think about it: Towels are used to wipe CLEAN water off of ALREADY-CLEAN bodies. Not much dirt or bacteria there, folks.

How to train your spouse and children to do this? Give them one towel and tell them it's the only one they can use for the week. Stash all the others in a hiding place.

Take CONTROL of your laundry, and you will save energy, money and hours of time.

Your handy hint about towels might work except:
-In a household with young boys who turn on the shower and sit on the toilet for what they thing is a prescribed length of time for a shower -- use the towel to get rid of the dirtiest spots.
-Use any available towel to shine their shoes -- mop up something off floor, etc..
-Parents who want to know where a towel has been before using.
-Clearing the towel racks once a day for laundry is a small price to pay for peace of mind about a towel's travels.

Funny: NO ONE wants to comment on this publicly, but I'm getting a lot of emails on it....so here's another:

"I must agree. We cycle through our white towels twice a week, just cause we have kids who tend to spill, etc. My highest recommendation to you and your readers is WHITE TOWELS. The bleach-ability factor cannot be outdone by the most fashionable of colors."

Ad again: And I agree...we have white towels. That way you can tell when you need to change them out. No camouflaging of dirt.

I am shamed for the human race that you had to post this hint. Common sense much??? We, too, use towels for a week to ten days. 'Course, we have no teensy greasemonkeys to mess them up, either.

Ahhh, but parents can and should train those teensy greasemonkeys.

I lived in the Northern British Columbia wilderness for 16 years and did my laundry in a wringer washer. I had to be very careful about how much laundry accumulated. When I moved back to the big city, changing my white towels whenever I felt like it was a grand luxury. The novelty has worn off a bit, but I still love the smell of freshly laundered towels and change them a few times a week.

whitelilycat: Yeah, fresh laundered towels are nice. 'Wonder if you use bleach or fabric softener....

You said "How to train your spouse and children to do this? Give them one towel and tell them it's the only one they can use for the week. Stash all the others in a hiding place.".

The other idea is inform to them "you have to wash your towels" (give him/her just two towels).
They'll appreciate your effort when you do the laundry.
