“The ramblings and grumblings of author Ad Hudler”

A behavioral problem on Coconut Drive
Thursday, April 8, 2010

Because I work alone, as most writers do, I spend hour upon hour by myself. Therefore, I don't have to monitor my behavior. No filters are needed in a workplace for one.

I recently wondered if I had been making lots of strange noises and exclamations when I'm by myself, so I set up a digital recorder in my work space and let it run for the day.

OMG. Apprently I've been acting like a chatty parrot. Here is just a sampling of Ad Bursts: "Bite me!" ... "Aiiiiiiii!" ... "Well, hello, Mrs. Postal Lady, I see you're early today.")

Yeegads. If I'm talking like this by myself and don't even know it, then what am I saying outside the home, in public?

Please pinch me when you hear it happen.

I'm laughing out loud. I don't need a recorder to know I talk to myself. I do it all the time when walking in the woods, and at home. Usually it's because I'm working through a book, and growling at the Muse. More people are using the trail I like, so I try to whisper.

But my eccentricities extend beyond that. If I have a pen while walking I'll also write down snippets of stories or sentences or ideas on my arm--if I don't have paper.

My ex dropped the kids off after one *really* interesting walk.

He said, "That's really weird, Maria."

I told him. "Well, you divorced me. Go home so you don't have to look at it."

I went back inside to write it all down. I had to use my photo copier to get part of it. I've no idea how I was limber enough to write it on the back side of my arm, but not limber enough to read it.

I take it you haven't gotten to the scribbling on yourself stage, eh?

Love it! My worst is in the car. I'll have entire conversations by myself. Sometimes I'm just practicing what I plan to say to someone or how I will pose some question to someone I'm writing about, but I get very animated and I'm sure some drivers think I'm like the crazy lady in the alley who talks to invisible aliens.

OK, Ad, so does it make it better that you've made people literally "LOL"??? Now you're not alone in your outbursts...but thanks for sharing!!
(and by the way, I'm thinking it's a male thing because John walks around here all the time talking to himself! And it's not because there's a lack of people to talk to...!)
